Inculcating the Love of the Qur’an: The Maiden Quran Competition & Special Iftar

A Celebration of Faith, Knowledge, and Community

On March 23rd, 2025, the Halymah Ibrahim Babangida Foundation proudly hosted the Maiden Quran Competition & Special Iftar Grand Finale at the Siyyam International Conference and Event Center, Bosso, Minna. This landmark event was more than a competition. It was a spiritual gathering designed to inspire love for the Qur’an, strengthen the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and foster unity among communities across Niger State.

The theme, “Inculcating the Love of Qur’an and Inspiring the Sunnah of the Prophet,” resonated deeply with participants and attendees alike. It reminded everyone that the Qur’an is not merely a book to be recited, but a guide to be lived, cherished, and passed on to future generations.

The Journey to the Grand Finale

The competition began with 25 contestants representing 25 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Niger State. Each contestant brought with them not only their memorization and recitation skills but also their passion for the Qur’an. Through rigorous rounds judged by a panel of 15 esteemed scholars, the field was narrowed to 12 finalists. These young men and women embodied the spirit of dedication, discipline, and reverence for the Qur’an.

The anticipation leading up to the finale was palpable. Families, teachers, and community leaders rallied behind their contestants, recognizing that this was not just about winning, it was about uplifting the values of faith, knowledge, and perseverance.

The Day of the Event

The Grand Finale unfolded in an atmosphere of reverence and joy. The hall was adorned with vibrant colors of purple, yellow, and white, symbolizing both celebration and spirituality. The open Qur’an displayed on the flyer became a living symbol as verses echoed through the hall, recited with precision and heartfelt devotion.

The program commenced at 2pm, with recitations that moved the audience to tears and reflection. Each finalist demonstrated not only mastery of tajweed (rules of recitation) but also a deep emotional connection to the words of Allah. The judges, seasoned scholars of the Qur’an, evaluated with fairness and wisdom, ensuring that the winners truly reflected excellence.

”Read in the name of your Lord who created. Created man from a clot. Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous—Who taught by the pen—taught man that which he knew not.”

(Surah Al-‘Alaq 96:1–5)

By evening, as the sun set and the call to Maghrib prayer was heard, the event transitioned seamlessly into the Special Iftar. Guests broke their fast together, sharing meals and conversations that reinforced the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood. It was a reminder that the Qur’an is not only recited in solitude but lived in community.

Honoring Spiritual Leadership

The presence of distinguished figures elevated the event’s significance. The Spiritual Father of the Day, Sheikh Umar Farooq, Director General of the Bureau of Religious Affairs, Niger State, offered words of guidance. His message emphasized that nurturing love for the Qur’an among youth is the surest path to building a society rooted in morality, compassion, and justice.

The Special Guest of Honor, Hajiya Aisha Ibrahim Babangida, underscored the foundation’s commitment to empowering communities through faith-based initiatives. Her presence was a testament to the foundation’s vision: transforming lives through education, empowerment, and opportunity.

Winners and Recognition

At the close of the competition, three winners emerged, celebrated not only for their recitation but for their embodiment of the Qur’an’s spirit. Their achievement was a beacon of hope, encouraging other young people to dedicate themselves to the study and practice of the Qur’an.

Yet, in truth, every participant was a winner. Each contestant carried the honor of representing their community and the responsibility of being an ambassador of the Qur’an. The competition instilled in them a lifelong commitment to learning, teaching, and living by the Qur’an.

The Broader Impact

The Maiden Quran Competition was not an isolated event, rather it was part of a larger mission. The Halymah Ibrahim Babangida Foundation recognizes that nurturing love for the Qur’an among youth is essential for building resilient communities. By organizing such events, the foundation creates platforms where young people can showcase their talents, deepen their faith, and inspire others.

This initiative also highlights the importance of education in Islam. The very first command revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was “Read”. This divine instruction underscores that knowledge is the foundation of faith. Competitions like these remind us that learning the Qur’an is not only about memorization but about understanding, reflection, and application in daily life.

A Night of Unity and Reflection

The Special Iftar was more than a meal, it was a symbol of unity. Attendees from diverse backgrounds sat side by side, breaking bread and sharing stories. The atmosphere was filled with gratitude, humility, and joy. It was a living example of the Prophet’s Sunnah, where community gatherings fostered love, compassion, and solidarity.

For many, the event was a spiritual recharge. It reminded them that Ramadan is not only about fasting but about reconnecting with the Qur’an, strengthening bonds, and renewing commitments to faith.

Looking Ahead

The success of the Maiden Quran Competition sets the stage for future initiatives. The foundation envisions expanding the competition to include more participants, broader outreach, and deeper engagement with communities. The goal is to make the love of the Qur’an a cornerstone of youth development programs, ensuring that future generations grow up with strong moral and spiritual foundations.

Conclusion: A Legacy of Faith

The Maiden Quran Competition & Special Iftar was a milestone in the foundation’s journey. It demonstrated that when communities come together in the spirit of faith, remarkable transformations occur. The Qur’an, as the ultimate source of guidance, continues to inspire hearts, shape minds, and unite people.
