Unity at the Table: A Legacy of Love and Nation Building

750+ Hearts, One Purpose

In a world often divided by differences, few things are more powerful than people coming together with a shared purpose.

That spirit was on full display as the Halymah Ibrahim Babangida (HIB) Foundation hosted its Interfaith Iftar, bringing together more than 750 Muslims, Christians, traditional leaders, community stakeholders, youth representatives, beneficiaries, and development partners for an evening centred on unity, dialogue, and nation-building.

Inspired by the enduring legacy of Dr Maryam Babangida, the gathering served as a reminder that beyond our different faiths, cultures, and backgrounds lies a common desire for peace, understanding, and a better future for all.

More than just an iftar, the event created a space where meaningful conversations could take place, friendships could be strengthened, and people from diverse communities could sit side by side, sharing not only a meal but also a collective vision for a stronger, more united nation.

One of the highlights of the programme was a keynote lecture delivered by Sheikh Nurudeen Lemu, who spoke extensively on the event theme. During the session, participants were encouraged to reflect on the role of the Qur’an as a guide for personal conduct, family life, leadership, and societal development. The lecture emphasised the importance of translating faith-based values into positive actions that contribute to stronger and more compassionate communities.

Recognising the importance of safety and civic awareness, representatives of the Nigerian Police Force delivered a session on personal security and crime prevention, sharing practical guidance on staying safe and contributing to safer communities.

Throughout the evening, participants engaged in discussions highlighting the importance of patriotism, social responsibility, mutual respect, and the role every citizen can play in building peaceful, thriving communities.

One of the most engaging moments of the gathering was the interactive knowledge and quiz competition, which encouraged active participation from attendees. Rather than limiting participation to pre-selected contestants, the competition was open to members of the audience, creating an atmosphere filled with excitement, learning, and friendly interaction.

Participants confidently stepped forward to answer questions covering a wide range of topics, including Qur’anic knowledge, general Islamic studies, Seerah, Zakah, Fiqh of Marriage, Tajweed, Janazah, Ramadan, Islamic inheritance, and Islamic transactions. To ensure broader participation, questions were presented in both English and Hausa, allowing people from different backgrounds and educational levels to take part comfortably.

What made the competition particularly special was seeing beneficiaries, students, community members, and stakeholders learning together, encouraging one another, and celebrating knowledge in an environment of respect and inclusion.

Outstanding participants were recognised with prizes, while scholarship support was also presented to deserving beneficiaries as part of the Foundation’s commitment to education and youth development.

“Abin da ya fi burge ni a yau shi ne yadda kowa ya samu damar shiga ba tare da an ware wasu mutane ba. Tambayoyin sun kasance masu ilmantarwa, kuma kasancewarsu cikin Hausa da Turanci ya sa kowa ya ji yana cikin shirin. Na tafi gida da sabon ilimi da kwarin gwiwa.” — Beneficiary and Participant

For many attendees, the evening offered far more than they expected.

“Despite being a Christian, I participated in the Ramadan food distribution and also attending this event left me with a renewed sense of hope. Seeing people from different backgrounds come together, learn together, and share the same table reminded me that our communities have far more that unites us than divides us.” — Participant

Another attendee reflected on the impact of the programme:

“The discussions, competitions, and interactions made the event memorable. It wasn’t just about breaking fast; it was about building relationships, sharing ideas, and learning from one another.” — Beneficiary

As the call to prayer approached and guests gathered to break their fast, the atmosphere was one of warmth, gratitude, and togetherness. Conversations continued across tables, new connections were formed, and old friendships were strengthened.

It was a simple but powerful reminder that meaningful change often begins when people choose to sit together, listen to one another, and work toward a common goal.

The event also paid tribute to the values championed by Dr Maryam Babangida, whose commitment to compassion, community development, and human dignity continues to inspire the Foundation’s work today.

Community Impact

By bringing together people from different faiths, communities, and walks of life, the Interfaith Iftar created a platform for dialogue, understanding, and shared learning.

The event encouraged participants to look beyond differences and focus on the values that unite them: compassion, respect, service, and a collective commitment to building a better society.

Through education, engagement, scholarship support, and fellowship, the programme strengthened relationships and reinforced the importance of unity as a foundation for sustainable development and nation-building.
